What the Cluck drops us into a classic landscape painting only to interrupt it with pure absurdity. Rising from the still waters is a giant cartoonish chicken head — wide-eyed, bewildered, and undeniably out of place. Its goofy expression collides with the otherwise serene backdrop of towering trees, warm sunlight, and drifting hot-air balloons, creating a surreal contrast that is equal parts humorous and uncanny.

Painted by Edmonton-based Canadian surrealist artist Josh Harnack, this piece is part of his ongoing Unofficial Collaborations series, where discarded or forgotten canvases are reimagined with whimsical new life. Both a parody and a tribute to traditional landscapes, What the Cluck embodies Harnack’s signature blend of whimsy, surrealism, and playful disruption, inviting viewers to laugh, question, and reconsider what belongs in a “serious” painting.
