Unsupervised Playtime by Edmonton-based artist Josh Harnack is a surreal narrative painting that captures the innocence of childhood, even in the presence of unseen chaos. In the foreground, a childlike figure plays freely with aliens and planes, immersed in imagination and wonder. In the background, however, a different story unfolds—adults quietly battle the very forces that threaten that innocence.
Blending humor with deeper meaning, the work reflects on protection, sacrifice, and the invisible efforts made to preserve a child’s sense of safety and play.
